U.S. Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen's letter of support to la Asamblea para Promover la Sociedad Civil en Cuba.

January 19, 2005

Dear Friends of the Asamblea Para Promover la Sociedad Civil:

With great joy and profound honor, I congratulate you and lend my support to the upcoming May 20th reunion to promote civil society and democracy on the island of Cuba. Your efforts symbolize the resilience and fervor of Cubans across the world.

On May 20th, we will commemorate Cuba’s hard-fought independence from Spanish colonial rule. This moment of triumph and relief ushered in a new era of freedom, a republican age. The captivated by the promise of enduring liberty. Nevertheless, the promise of a lasting and viable democracy would never be fully realized in Cuba. Fidel Castro’s Communist Revolution would catapult “La Perla de las Antillas” into one of the darkest episodes in its history at the hands of the brutal Castro tyranny.

It is both fitting and rewarding that you hold a conference on May 20th to promote civil society and liberty in Cuba. I know that soon May 20th will once again stand as an affirmation of Cuba democracy, as a new birth of freedom, as a celebration of victory over dictatorship. Positive change will no doubt come, and we work toward that goal every day. I unite my thoughts and prayers with the Cuban people, and ask them to believe: a true 20th of May celebration is on the horizon –Cuba will once again be free.

As President Bush eloquently stated during his inaugural address, “The best hope for peace in our world is the expansion of freedom in all the world…So it is the policy of the United States to seek and support the growth of democratic movements and institutions in every nation and culture, with the ultimate goal of ending tyranny in our world.”

I look forward to continuing to work together with my colleagues in Congress and the Administration to secure freedom and democracy for our Cuban brothers and sisters.

Once again, I strongly affirm my support for the upcoming May 20th reunion by our wonderful organization, the Asamblea Para Promover la Sociedad Civil and congratulate you for your fervor and commitment to a free Cuba.

Sincerely,

Ileana Ros-Lehtinen
Member of U.S. Congress.
